IMDb Editor-in-Chief Arno Kazarian weighs in on 12 films screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival. , including Anora and the dangerous and oddly erotic Misericordia.. A French title misspells the Indian city as “Dehli”.. Appeared in Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna’s SPICY & Selena Shocks! (2024). El Alegato Written by Camille, Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Starring Zoé Saldana. I came to write this after seeing the gala screening at the London Film Festival.
And not only that, she does it perfectly
A wild and crazy roller coaster film that mixes crime, comedy, musical and thriller all at once, and does it brilliantly! The four actresses at the center are the force and have been perfectly directed by Audiard. Karla plays her character before and after transitioning as it comes naturally to her, having publicly surpassed her as an actress. It is a powerful performance and so typical of our times. I am proud to live in a time where a transgender actress plays a transgender role. The tragedy of leaving a life behind, but the promise of the one he always needed. Zoe can sing, dance, cry and laugh and everything I think an actor dreams of doing, let alone in a film. I have never seen one of her films before and I am so happy this is my first because she shines!
And he has a beautiful voice!
There is a scene of her in the car, where realizing what has just happened, she breaks down hysterically. Think Margo in Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liaisons. That scene alone should win him an Oscar. Selena, who I was most looking forward to seeing in this film, does it out of left field. Playing a mobster wife, the kind of icy, seething woman beneath the surface that needs revisiting in my humble opinion, because as a girl who has been through intense scrutiny and then psychosis, she knows all too well what it means to stay silent for too long. The only moment during the screening where I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience was when her character Jessi finally unleashes her emotions on us, the audience, after years of oppression. The agony and anger can be heard in her voice. It’s proof of why she said acting was her true calling and how passionate she is about it.
It is touching!
It would be foolish to still think that she is a Disney kid and has something to prove. Her journey as an actress is truly fascinating as a fan for almost 2 decades. Finally, Adriana’s character is like the sun in the otherwise dark and twisted world that the film inhabits. And it perfectly complements the work of the other 3 actresses. She brings love and sweetness to the story through her work. It is important to note that this film is like an opera. It is reminiscent of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was also almost entirely sung. Emotionally, it is definitely intense, with little moments of calm when you realize you are watching a film.
The cinematography was brilliant
At the end of the film, Selena’s character is almost unconscious in the passenger seat while her lover drives angrily. The way the camera cuts from the car to her face… it was like a painting, very poetic but tragic. I’m so glad I watched it before it came out on Netflix. It’s amazing when a movie can make you feel that way. To take you out of your normal and make you go a little crazy. No need to waste time scrolling endlessly: here’s the full lineup of new movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this month.
